Benin: Arrest of Former President’s Son and Rising Tensions with Togo After Failed Coup

Benin has witnessed fresh political and security developments, as the opposition Democrats party announced the arrest of its national secretary for foreign affairs, Chabi Georges Nadjime Yayi, son of former president Boni Yayi.

The party described the arrest as a “blatant violation of the law,” stating that Nadjime Yayi was taken to the Economic and Financial Crimes Unit without prior notification to his family or party leadership. It has called for his immediate release.

The arrest comes just days after a failed coup attempt led by Colonel Pascal Tigri, who reportedly fled to neighboring Togo.

Beninese authorities have since submitted an official extradition request to Togo, a move that could heighten diplomatic tensions between the two countries should Togolese authorities refuse to comply.

The unfolding security crisis comes as Benin prepares for a crucial presidential election expected to mark the end of President Patrice Talon’s tenure. Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni is widely seen as the leading contender to succeed him.
