The UN Security Council has unanimously approved a one-year extension of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), following a UK-sponsored resolution.
In its statement, the Council expressed its full support for Hana Tetteh, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya, commending her efforts to advance an inclusive political process.
The resolution also urges Libya’s political institutions to make the necessary compromises to revive negotiations and hold elections as soon as possible.
Russia’s UN Ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, said the decision underscores the importance of UNSMIL’s role in facilitating a political settlement and reaffirmed that the mission remains a key pillar of international mediation efforts.
The move comes amid continued political fragmentation in Libya, which remains divided between rival administrations in Tripoli and Benghazi, more than a decade after the 2011 uprising.
