Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has called for the creation of a federal military alliance bringing together East African nations, warning against “a Libya-style scenario” and cautioning against foreign military intervention.
He said such a union would form “a strong and influential military force” capable of ensuring regional security.
Speaking on a radio program, Museveni stressed the need to merge the military forces of countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Somalia, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Responding to controversy stirred by his earlier remarks, the Ugandan president issued a statement clarifying that his comments were not meant to be hostile toward Kenya, but aimed at highlighting the importance of long-term political and military integration to address shared vulnerabilities and ease the burden on coastal states.
