A senior U.S. official has revealed that the Biden administration is considering sanctions and potential military engagement against Nigeria as part of a plan aimed at pressuring the country to pay greater attention to protecting Christian communities and religious freedoms.
The comments were made during a briefing to a House committee by the State Department’s top official for African affairs, who said the plan is under development and will involve multiple U.S. government agencies.
In response, the Nigerian government reiterated its rejection of these allegations, describing them as “misleading.” It stressed that it remains committed to protecting all citizens and combating extremism, while expressing hope that Washington will continue to be a close ally.
