Tanzania’s President Appoints Mwigulu Nchemba as Prime Mشinister

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has appointed former finance minister Mwigulu Nchemba as the country’s new prime minister, following last October’s disputed general elections, which she won by a wide margin.

Nchemba is expected to be confirmed easily by Parliament, where the ruling party holds a strong majority.

The appointment comes amid heightened political tensions, with the opposition accusing the government of rigging the election results.

The vote was accompanied by violent protests. Rights groups and the UN Human Rights Office reported hundreds of deaths at the hands of security forces, while the opposition claimed the toll exceeded one thousand.

The government has dismissed these figures as exaggerated, and President Hassan has rejected criticism, insisting that the electoral process was fair and transparent.
