The Government of South Sudan has reaffirmed its full commitment to implementing the peace agreement with opposition groups, calling it the only viable path toward stability and the conclusion of the transitional period.
Speaking before the UN Security Council, the country’s Permanent Representative, Cecilia Adut Manyok, emphasized that any adjustments to the structure of the UN Mission (UNMISS) must be made in consultation with her government.
She also highlighted South Sudan’s neutral stance and its decision to keep borders open to refugees from Sudan, despite the country’s limited resources.
The UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations reiterated that the peace deal remains the cornerstone for lasting stability, amid dwindling trust between rival factions.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Deputy Envoy stressed that the continuation of the arms embargo remains the main obstacle to building a unified national army, reiterating Moscow’s call for its removal.
