Senegal’s Minister of Defense, General Birame Diop, met with a high-level Malian military delegation led by Colonel Amara Maïga, Technical Adviser for Cooperation at Mali’s Ministry of Defense, to discuss ways to enhance military collaboration between the two neighboring countries.
Talks focused on regional security coordination and bilateral defense mechanisms, against the backdrop of worsening insecurity in Mali, where the country faces a severe fuel shortage caused by a blockade imposed by Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) through repeated attacks on supply convoys.
The two nations share mutual security and economic interests: Senegal is a key fuel supplier to Mali, while Mali emerged as Senegal’s top African trading partner in 2024, accounting for more than half of Senegal’s exports to the continent.
The meeting capped a series of high-level visits between the two governments over the past year, underscoring their commitment to deepening cooperation and jointly addressing shared regional challenges.
