More than 100 people have been killed in a landslide at the “Molondo Lualaba” gold mine near the city of Kolwezi in southern Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to local media reports, the disaster occurred on Friday afternoon, as rescue teams continued searching through the debris amid fears that more victims may still be trapped.
The mineral-rich southern region attracts large numbers of miners — including adults and children — to unregulated, makeshift mining sites known for dangerous working conditions and exposure to toxic substances, making such tragedies a recurring reality in the country.
