Responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks hinting at a possible military intervention in Nigeria, the Nigerian government said it welcomes American support in combating armed groups, but only under clear conditions respecting national sovereignty.
Trump had stated that he instructed the Pentagon to prepare for potential military action should Nigerian authorities fail to stop the killing of Christians in the country’s north.
In reaction, Daniel Bwala, adviser to the Nigerian president, said:
“We welcome U.S. assistance as long as it recognizes our sovereignty and the unity of our territory.”
The statement appeared aimed at easing rising tensions between Abuja and Washington while reaffirming Nigeria’s independence in managing its internal security affairs.
Nigeria has for years grappled with repeated attacks by armed groups in its northern and central regions, resulting in thousands of deaths and millions displaced, amid growing international concern over the deteriorating humanitarian and security situation.
