Kenya has come under a large-scale cyberattack that crippled several government websites and services for hours, including the presidential website and those of the ministries of education, health and interior.
The attackers replaced the homepages of these websites with racist messages, as authorities suspect that a group calling itself “PCP@Kenya” is behind the attack.
The incident adds to a growing list of cyberattacks targeting Kenya, including a 2016 breach of the Treasury that caused an estimated loss of four billion shillings, and a July 2023 attack by the “Anonymous Sudan” group that targeted the government’s e-citizen platform.
The Communications Authority of Kenya had previously warned of cybersecurity vulnerabilities, reporting 842 attempted cyberattacks between July and September of this year alone.
