Islamic State ‑ West Africa Province executes senior Nigerian officer

Armed fighters from the Islamic State – West Africa Province (ISWAP) have announced the execution of a senior Nigerian army officer who was captured during an ambush on a military convoy in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno State. According to the group, the executed officer was Brig. Gen. Mohammad Uba, commander of Task Force Brigade 25.

The announcement was made via a statement posted on the militant group’s propaganda channel. In a prior statement, the Nigerian army denied any abduction of the officer, calling the reports “false news.” The army also confirmed the killing of four soldiers in the attack.

The incident occurs amid a surge in attacks in Borno State — a focal point of the insurgency — raising renewed questions about the effectiveness of counter-insurgency operations in the region.
