Guinea-Bissau’s ousted president, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, has arrived in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo, just days after the military seized power.
Congolese government sources reported that Embaló arrived aboard a private jet.
Soldiers had overthrown Embaló’s government last Wednesday, before the presidential and legislative election results were announced, further deepening the country’s political instability.
Following the coup, the headquarters of the largest opposition party was raided by an armed militia in the capital, Bissau.
Guinea-Bissau was also suspended from the African Union two days after the coup, reflecting regional concern over the tense situation in the coastal nation, long troubled by recurrent military takeovers.
