The presidents of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda will travel to Washington next week to sign a peace agreement and meet with U.S. President Donald Trump.
The meeting aims to build on previous peace accords and advance regional economic integration.
According to diplomatic sources and the spokesperson for the Congolese president, President Félix Tshisekedi will endorse the agreements, stressing that respect for sovereignty is a fundamental condition for regional integration.
The meeting comes as eastern DR Congo continues to face an armed conflict with the M23 rebel movement, which Rwanda is accused of supporting.
Through its mediation, the United States also hopes to attract more Western investment into the mining sector of this mineral-rich region.
