Burkina Faso’s Transitional Legislative Assembly has passed a law dissolving the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) and transferring all of its responsibilities to the Ministry of Territorial Administration.
According to Minister Émile Zerbo, the move aims to “strengthen institutional coherence and streamline state operations.” He explained that a recent institutional review found the commission “no longer reflects the country’s current social and political realities” and had become “a financial burden.”
Regarding the 104 commission employees, the minister announced the creation of a special task force to oversee the transfer of personnel and resources, assuring that “what remains useful will be retained.”
The CENI, established in 2004, had been responsible for organizing every national election in Burkina Faso until its dissolution under this new reform.
