Fierce fighting between Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has left at least 150 fighters dead, according to local and intelligence sources.
Reports from French media indicate that the clashes around Lake Chad caused heavy casualties on both sides of the rival jihadist groups.
A member of a pro-government militia supporting the Nigerian army estimated that around 200 IS fighters were killed in the battle.
Meanwhile, a regional intelligence source put the death toll at over 150, while a former Boko Haram member claimed his group lost only four fighters, compared to 300 killed from ISWAP.
The two groups have been locked in sporadic, bloody battles since their split in 2016 over ideological differences, with most of the fighting centered around the Lake Chad basin, spanning the borders of Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon.
