Cameroonian President Paul Biya was sworn in on Thursday in the capital Yaoundé for an eighth presidential term, during an official ceremony overshadowed by opposition protests questioning the legitimacy of the election.
The ceremony coincided with the 43rd anniversary of Biya’s rise to power, marked by festive preparations in the capital, where banners thanking the president were prominently displayed.
Over 1,500 guests were invited, including Western diplomats and defeated presidential candidates.
The inauguration took place against the backdrop of “Ghost Town” protests organized by the opposition.
The Cameroon People’s Party condemned what it called “arbitrary arrests” and urged the international community to withhold recognition of the election results.
