The African Union has suspended Guinea-Bissau from all its bodies in response to the military’s seizure of power in the country.
The AU’s Peace and Security Council condemned what it described as an “unconstitutional change” of government.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) also denounced the coup, announcing the suspension of Guinea-Bissau and calling on the armed forces to return to their barracks.
Meanwhile, officials voiced differing interpretations of the events: the Senegalese prime minister described them as a “hoax,” while a former Nigerian leader referred to them as a “ceremonial coup.”
The military justified its actions by claiming it aimed to foil a plot to destabilize the country.
The United Nations expressed concern over human rights violations, including arbitrary detentions and the targeting of journalists.
