Syrian President Visits Moscow for the First Time, Holds Talks with Putin on Strengthening Cooperation

Russian President Vladimir Putin received his Syrian counterpart, Ahmed al-Sharaa, at the Kremlin in what marks al-Sharaa’s first official visit to the Russian capital.

The two leaders discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation across various sectors. President Putin expressed confidence that the partnership would yield positive outcomes for both nations, emphasizing the strength of the historic ties between Moscow and Damascus.

He also announced the resumption of the joint Russian-Syrian commission’s work and reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to move forward with joint development projects.

President al-Sharaa, for his part, underscored the enduring relations between Syria and Russia, noting that his country seeks to redefine the nature of those ties while maintaining all previous agreements.

He stated that the visit aims to introduce the world to a “new Syria.”

The Syrian delegation included the ministers of foreign affairs and defense, along with several economic and military officials. The talks are also expected to cover the future of Russia’s two military bases in Syria and efforts to rebuild the Syrian army.
