Sweden has unveiled a major defense budget expansion, pledging to raise military spending to 3.5% of GDP — the country’s largest buildup since the Cold War.
The move comes just months after Sweden’s official accession to NATO, amid growing European security concerns driven by the war in Ukraine and escalating tensions with Russia.
Stockholm plans significant investments in modernizing its armed forces, strengthening air defense, and deepening strategic cooperation with Finland and the United States.
The Swedish government says the measure is intended to “safeguard national security and regional stability,” while analysts describe it as a decisive break from the country’s long-standing tradition of military neutrality.
