The Sudanese army has announced the withdrawal of its troops from the headquarters of the 6th Infantry Division in El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, describing the move as a “tactical retreat.”
The decision followed intense fighting with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who later declared full control over the key military base.
Heavy clashes erupted early Sunday around the compound, leading to the withdrawal of regular army units and allied forces, who stated they intend to “regroup and reorganize” to retake lost positions.
El-Fasher, a vital hub for humanitarian operations in Darfur, has been under siege by the RSF since May, raising deep concern over worsening conditions for civilians.
The conflict, ongoing since April 2023, has left thousands dead and millions displaced, in what the UN describes as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
