Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been sent to La Santé prison in Paris after being convicted of “criminal conspiracy” in connection with the alleged Libyan financing of his 2007 presidential campaign.
The development comes a day after President Emmanuel Macron received Sarkozy at the Élysée Palace — a meeting that sparked widespread controversy and criticism from opposition parties, which denounced it as an attempt to “pressure the judiciary.”
Sarkozy was found guilty of allowing close associates to engage with the regime of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to secure illegal funding for his campaign. Investigators uncovered evidence of money transfers from Libya aimed at supporting his 2007 bid for the presidency.
The Court of Appeal is expected to review Sarkozy’s request for temporary release within the next two months, while proceedings in the Libyan financing case continue.
