Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has denied media reports claiming that the cancellation of the country’s 65th Independence Day celebrations was linked to an attempted coup, calling the allegations “false and misleading.”
In a statement, Defence Information Director Brigadier General Tukur Gusau said the decision was made to allow the president to attend a bilateral meeting abroad and to enable the armed forces to sustain the momentum of ongoing security operations.
He clarified that the ongoing investigation involving 16 officers is a “routine internal process” aimed at ensuring discipline, emphasizing that the military remains committed to the constitution and the federal government.
The Defence Headquarters urged the public to disregard misinformation and reaffirmed the federal authorities’ commitment to the nation’s security and welfare.
