Madagascar’s military has announced that Colonel Michael Randrianirina, the country’s new military ruler, has assumed power following a coup that ousted President Andry Rajoelina.
Randrianirina is expected to be sworn in as head of state soon. He stated that the transitional period could last up to two years, during which an interim government will be formed and new elections organized.
The development comes amid widespread protests and defections within the army and police.
In response to the coup, the African Union suspended Madagascar’s membership, while the ousted president, Andry Rajoelina, fled the country.
Colonel Randrianirina was previously one of the officers involved in the 2009 coup that brought Rajoelina to power, before later breaking ranks with him.
