Kenyan President William Ruto has declared seven days of national mourning following the death of former Prime Minister and longtime opposition leader Raila Odinga, who passed away at the age of 80.
A state funeral will be held in his honor, while Friday has been declared a public holiday nationwide to commemorate his remarkable political legacy.
Odinga’s body arrived this morning at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport under tight security. He will be laid to rest in his hometown of Bondo, in accordance with his wish to be buried within 72 hours.
A towering figure in Kenyan politics for over half a century, Odinga was instrumental in the country’s democratic transition and played a key role in the drafting of the 2010 Constitution.
