Chadian President Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno has signed a decree enacting the amended Constitution after it was overwhelmingly approved by Parliament.
The constitutional reform includes key changes, notably extending the presidential term from five to seven years and removing term limits—effectively allowing President Déby to run for an unlimited number of mandates.
Other provisions introduce the position of Deputy Prime Minister, unify the term lengths of members of Parliament, the Senate, and local councils to six years, and permit the president to lead a political party while providing state funding for election campaigns.
The amended Constitution will take effect immediately upon its publication in the official gazette—a move the government described as an effort to “modernize the legal framework” and adapt it to current national circumstances.
