Armed Attacks on Fuel Convoys in Mali Deepen Energy Crisis

Fighters from the al-Qaeda–linked group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) launched a series of attacks on fuel truck convoys in the Sikasso region of southern Mali, setting dozens of tankers ablaze. The assaults occurred despite military protection for convoys arriving from Côte d’Ivoire.

The repeated attacks—including a similar one earlier this week—have effectively cut off fuel imports, triggering a severe shortage in the capital Bamako and other parts of the country.

Meanwhile, videos released by the militants show three hostages, including the president of the Ségou regional council, Siaka Dembélé, and two soldiers. The captors said the men are unharmed and urged the authorities to work for their release.
