African Union Suspends Madagascar Following Military Coup

The African Union has immediately suspended Madagascar from all its institutions in response to the military takeover of power in the country.

The announcement was made by AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.

The decision comes just days after special forces led by Colonel Michael Randrianirina seized power following the parliament’s removal of President Andry Rajoelina, who is believed to have fled the country.

Madagascar now enters a period of military rule, as the international community expresses deep concern over the developments. The army has pledged to hold elections within the next two years.
