The International Court of Justice has officially confirmed Brazil’s decision to join the case filed by South Africa against Israel, accusing it of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.

The move follows a request submitted by Brasilia on September 17, under Article 63 of the Court’s Statute, as a state party to the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

By doing so, Brazil joins a growing list of countries—including Spain, Turkey, and Colombia—that have sought to take part in the proceedings initiated by South Africa in December 2023, alleging that Israel committed serious human rights violations and crimes against the Palestinian people.

The ICJ had previously issued provisional measures ordering Israel to take urgent steps to protect Palestinian civilians — a ruling described as “historic” — while South Africa’s initiative continues to face strong opposition from Washington.
