Sudan: Over 1,000 killed in Darfur landslide

The Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Abdelwahid Nour, announced that a massive landslide struck the Jebel Marra area in western Darfur, killing more than 1,000 people and completely wiping out a village.

According to the movement, the disaster followed heavy rainfall, leaving only one survivor. The village was reportedly “flattened,” killing men, women, and children who had sought refuge there from the ongoing war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.

The movement appealed urgently to the United Nations and international relief agencies to assist in recovering the bodies.

This catastrophe comes at a time when more than half of Sudan’s population is already facing acute hunger as the civil war, now in its second year, has displaced millions from their homes.
