Sudan announces 98% withdrawal of armed forces from Khartoum, urges displaced residents to return

Sudanese authorities have announced that more than 98% of their armed forces have withdrawn from the capital Khartoum, urging residents who fled the fighting to return home.

Lieutenant General Ibrahim Jaber, head of the Higher Committee for Preparing the Environment for Citizens’ Return to Khartoum State, said that all combat troops had been relocated to bases outside the capital, with the remaining units also set to be transferred soon.

The announcement comes amid growing complaints from residents of seven neighborhoods about insecurity caused by the presence of armed forces and groups accused of looting and theft.

A Sudanese official also reported that more than 3,800 undocumented foreigners and refugees had been relocated to designated camps, as part of new security measures that include banning the carrying of weapons and military uniforms in public, as well as prohibiting the use of motorcycles and unregistered vehicles.
