Four soldiers and at least ten fighters were killed in clashes between the army and an armed group in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State.
Army spokespersons reported that the attackers, known as the “White Army,” launched three separate assaults on military positions near the town of Nasir.
The fighting comes amid ongoing political tensions, with the armed group seen as linked to the opposition party led by former Vice President Riek Machar, who was arrested in March over allegations of backing an armed rebellion.
Machar’s arrest has raised fears of the collapse of the 2018 peace agreement that ended a bloody civil war, fueling concerns that the country could slide back into a new wave of ethnic conflict.
