President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that South Africa has dispatched an official delegation to the United States to reopen talks aimed at removing the steep tariffs imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump on its exports.
The move comes after months of failed attempts by Pretoria to avoid the levies, with Washington previously declining offers to negotiate.
The South African envoys are scheduled to meet with U.S. administration officials, lawmakers, and business leaders.
Ramaphosa explained that the discussions will focus on the export of natural resources, particularly critical minerals, while emphasizing South Africa’s goal of exporting them as manufactured goods rather than raw materials.
Bilateral relations between the two countries remain strained, with Trump frequently criticizing South Africa’s domestic policies.
