Speaking before the UN General Assembly, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye accused Israel of committing “ethnic cleansing” in Gaza, describing the situation as a “tragedy that has crossed all boundaries.”
Faye warned that the international community’s failure to act amounts to “passive complicity,” urging an “immediate ceasefire,” an end to the occupation, and relief for civilian suffering.
He reaffirmed Senegal’s commitment to the two-state solution, welcoming recent historic recognitions of the State of Palestine by Western nations, while stressing that the UN’s core principles had “collapsed” in the face of what is happening in Gaza.
Senegal, which chairs the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, has a history of fluctuating ties with Israel, amid growing protests demanding a severance of relations since the start of the offensive.
