An independent coalition of activists and journalists in Niger has announced the formation of the “Group of 25”, urging a return to constitutional order following the July 2023 coup.
In a statement, whose signatories withheld their identities for security reasons, the group outlined its key goals: the immediate release of ousted president Mohamed Bazoum, an end to military rule, and the adoption of a national plan to confront escalating terrorist threats.
The collective sharply criticized the ruling military council, arguing that recent actions — including the installation of General Abdourahmane Tiani as president and the dissolution of political parties — are driving the country into a “political deadlock.” It described the dialogues organized by the junta as “theatrical exercises aimed at entrenching their rule.”
Warning of a security situation “almost out of control,” the group urged Nigeriens to voice their demands “peacefully” and press for genuine elections that reflect the popular will.
