Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina has dissolved his government following a week of mass protests that left 22 people dead and more than 100 injured, according to the UN.
The demonstrations in Antananarivo erupted over worsening living conditions and frequent power and water cuts, with security forces using tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds.
In a televised address, Rajoelina admitted government failings, saying, “We apologize for the shortcomings of some cabinet members,” while expressing readiness to open dialogue with the youth.
Madagascar faces a severe economic crisis, with three-quarters of its population living below the poverty line, compounded by the collapse of basic services.
