Madagascar Imposes Curfew in Capital Amid Protests Over Services Crisis

Authorities in Madagascar have imposed a night-time curfew in the capital Antananarivo following protests over power outages and water shortages that turned violent.

Police clashed with demonstrators who defied earlier warnings, using tear gas to disperse the crowds.

General Angelo Ravelonarivo, head of the joint security task force, said the measure was aimed at “protecting residents and their property” and would remain in place until public order is restored.

Madagascar, one of the world’s poorest countries, faces a severe basic services crisis, with protesters blaming President Andry Rajoelina’s government for worsening living conditions.
