The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, part of the African Union, has voiced concern over agreements signed by the United States with African countries such as Rwanda and Uganda to receive deported migrants.
The Commission urged these countries to ensure transparency in such deals, safeguard the rights of deportees, and avoid turning Africa into a “landing zone for arbitrary expulsions.”
It stressed that these agreements violate core international human rights principles, including the principle of non-refoulement and the prohibition of mass expulsions.
Uganda recently signed a “temporary” agreement with Washington to accept third-country deportees, while other states, such as Nigeria, have refused to bow to similar U.S. pressure.
