A powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 struck southeastern Afghanistan, leaving hundreds dead and injured, according to initial reports.
The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) said the quake’s epicenter was located at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Local officials, quoted by international media, expressed fears that the death toll could rise into the hundreds.
Taliban authorities announced a preliminary figure of at least 250 deaths in the country’s eastern provinces.
However, Ajmal Darwish, spokesman for the health department in Nangarhar province, gave a different toll, reporting 9 dead and 25 injured in that province.
Rescue teams are still working at the site to fully assess the scale of the damage in the affected areas.
