Military leaders from the United States and several European countries held talks in Washington this week to discuss possible military options to bring the war in Ukraine to an end.
The discussions included representatives from the United States, Ukraine, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Finland.
Options under consideration involve providing security guarantees to Ukraine, with European countries expected to contribute “the bulk” of any deployed forces. Proposals include deploying European troops to Ukraine under U.S. command, as well as U.S. air support and the provision of advanced air defense systems.
These talks come as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made clear that any meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin must be preceded by an agreement on security guarantees.
