Tunisia: Thousands protest to defend trade union rights and civil liberties

Thousands of Tunisians took to the streets of the capital Tunis, in a demonstration organized by the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), to protest what they described as the erosion of trade union rights and civil liberties.

Marching from the UGTT headquarters along Avenue Habib Bourguiba, demonstrators chanted slogans demanding the protection of workers’ rights, better wages, and stronger measures against poverty.

UGTT Secretary-General Noureddine Taboubi declared during the rally that the union “will not deviate from the path of struggle” and will continue to defend social rights.

The protest comes amid rising tensions. Last month, a strike by the UGTT disrupted transport services, while earlier this month, supporters of President Kais Saied held a counter-demonstration.
