The Sudanese government has urged the African Union to fully restore the country’s membership as part of efforts to support the transitional phase, promote democratic transformation, and build peace.
In a statement, Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs praised its cooperation with the African Union and expressed a desire to strengthen this partnership.
Khartoum also welcomed the African Union’s statement condemning the formation of a “parallel government” by the rebel coalition led by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), calling on the international community to adopt a similar stance.
The African Union had suspended Sudan’s membership in 2021 following the military coup.
This appeal comes after the rebel coalition announced on July 26 the formation of a parallel government in which the RSF secured 42% of the seats, while its leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemetti), was appointed as head of the Presidential Council.
The country has been mired in a civil war since April 2023 between the regular army and the RSF.
