Senegal’s president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, held talks with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace in Paris, during his first official visit to France since taking office.
The meeting focused on restructuring bilateral relations to align with the priorities of Senegal’s new government, following France’s withdrawal from its last military bases in Senegal a few months ago.
A statement from the French presidency said both leaders expressed their desire to “renew and strengthen” the partnership between Dakar and Paris, including preparations for a joint government meeting to review all bilateral projects and programs.
Talks also covered regional security issues, particularly ongoing terrorist threats in neighboring countries, as well as ways to support Senegal’s economic stability.
President Macron further reiterated France’s support for ongoing negotiations between Senegal and the International Monetary Fund as Dakar seeks to rebalance its public finances.
