Mali: Army reports attacks as JNIM claims control of military sites

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) reported that several of their positions came under coordinated attacks early Tuesday in the areas of Farabougou and Biri Kewere, in central Mali.

In response, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) claimed responsibility for the assaults, stating that it had taken control of a military barracks in Farabougou and targeted a military vehicle with an improvised explosive device west of Mourja.

These developments come amid an escalation of military activity in the region. At the end of July, the Malian army announced, alongside the forces of Niger and Burkina Faso, that joint operations had killed dozens of armed fighters in a series of airstrikes.
