Mali and Burkina Faso were notably absent from the high-level African military conference held in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, complicating efforts to develop a unified continental security strategy.
Their absence comes after both countries withdrew from ECOWAS and, together with Niger, established the “Alliance of Sahel States.” Niger, however, did send a representative to the meeting.
The landmark conference focused on strengthening military cooperation and finding local solutions to Africa’s security challenges, at a time when the region faces rising conflicts and expanding military influence—casting doubt on the future of regional cooperation.
