Media sources reported two powerful explosions early Sunday in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, following Israeli airstrikes that targeted the Hizziz power station in the southern part of the city.
According to Reuters, eyewitnesses confirmed hearing two loud blasts near the facility. Hazem al-Asad, a senior political bureau member of the Houthi movement (Ansar Allah), described the attack as a “deliberate strike on vital civilian infrastructure.”
The strikes are part of Israel’s ongoing escalation in Yemen since July 2024, which has targeted ports, airports, and key infrastructure. The Houthis have responded with missile and drone attacks on Israeli targets in support of Gaza.
This escalation comes against the backdrop of Israel’s war on Gaza, ongoing since October 2023, which has killed more than 61,000 Palestinians and wounded 155,000, alongside a severe humanitarian crisis marked by famine that has claimed hundreds of lives.
