Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo held the first meeting of the Joint Supervisory Committee following the signing of the historic peace agreement in Washington on June 27.
The meeting, attended by representatives from the African Union, Qatar, and the United States, included extensive discussions on mechanisms to implement the agreement’s provisions, including security and humanitarian aspects.
Mossad Boulos, Senior Advisor to the U.S. President for African Affairs, affirmed that the process is “on track,” announcing that a security meeting will be held soon to build confidence between the two sides.
Meanwhile, reports indicated an increased military presence of armed groups, posing a challenge to the implementation of the agreement.
The agreement stipulates the disarmament of militias, troop withdrawals, the facilitation of displaced persons’ return, and the strengthening of bilateral cooperation. While the Rwandan Parliament has ratified the agreement, the Senate is still reviewing it for final approval.
