Ghana holds state funeral for helicopter crash victims with president in attendance

Ghana has held a state funeral for eight victims, including Defense Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who died in a military helicopter crash on August 6 while traveling from Accra to Obuasi in the Ashanti region.

President John Dramani Mahama attended the national memorial, paying tribute to the victims and pledging government support for their families, including measures to honor their service and secure their relatives’ future.

The helicopter vanished from radar screens shortly after takeoff amid reports of heavy fog in the area. Both black boxes were recovered and are being analyzed to determine the cause of what the government has called a “national tragedy.”

The entire nation went into mourning, with flags flown at half-mast and condolences pouring in from across the political and social spectrum.
