Egyptian voters continue casting their ballots in the two-day Senate elections, where 428 candidates are competing for individual seats in the 300-member council (200 elected and 100 appointed by the president).
The elections are being held in 8,286 polling stations under judicial supervision, with only one list running under the proportional representation system, known as the “National List for Egypt.”
Egyptians abroad will cast their ballots on August 25–26 if a runoff is required.
The National Election Authority announced a fine of 500 Egyptian pounds (around $10) for registered voters who fail to vote, in an attempt to boost participation. However, observers remain skeptical about high voter turnout, given the Senate’s primarily advisory role.
It is worth noting that Egyptians abroad had already voted on August 1–2 in 136 diplomatic missions, with final results expected on August 12.
