Syria’s Ministry of Defense has declared a ceasefire in the province of Sweida following the deployment of government forces to halt deadly clashes between armed Druze groups and Bedouin tribes, which have left dozens dead. The announcement came after an agreement with local elders, alongside the withdrawal of heavy military equipment.
Simultaneously, the Israeli military launched airstrikes on Syrian positions in Sweida. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed he had ordered the strikes in response to what he called “unauthorized weapons deployments” by Syrian forces, alleging violations of prior agreements.
The Druze spiritual leadership in Syria welcomed the army’s arrival, while another senior Druze figure accused the government of “indiscriminate shelling” and called for resistance against it.
Syrian authorities have continued security operations and imposed a curfew in the affected region.
