Gora Khouma, Secretary General of the Union of Road Transport Workers in Senegal, has called on truck drivers to immediately stop traveling to Mali due to the growing number of armed attacks near the border areas between the two countries.
This call comes after a series of recent attacks targeting areas close to the Senegalese border, raising serious concerns among truck drivers who rely on the vital Dakar-Bamako corridor for transporting goods.
Khouma stated that the security situation in the border regions with Mali has become extremely dangerous, noting that the Malian government has failed to provide adequate protection for drivers and their vehicles.
“Drivers are directly exposed to the risks, so we advise them not to risk their lives until the security situation improves,” he said.
The decision is expected to significantly impact commercial transport between Senegal and Mali, especially since the Dakar-Bamako route is one of the region’s most important trade corridors.
Economic experts warn that a prolonged halt in truck traffic could lead to rising prices for basic commodities in both countries.
The Senegal-Mali border area has seen escalating security tensions in recent months, with increased activity by armed groups forcing several companies to reassess their operations in the region.
